I always find this a little interesting whenever I go through the supermarket and see people leave behind items in a section where it clearly doesn’t belong. In a lot of cases this is due to people already having an item in hand to buy just to walk by a different item that seems to be on sale. As a result, they think the item is a better value than what they originally intended buy and so they get that instead while leaving the old item behind.
In this case there was a ton of juice on sale as I was looking for things that cost one dollar or less. As you can see, people left behind soda to get this juice instead. I have to think to a certain extent that some people do this because they feel the juice is healthier than the soda. So if it is cheaper why not? Although, keep in mind I am not entirely sure if that juice truly is better as I am not exactly sure how the stuff was made. That makes me think though, would you actually buy healthier items if the cost was the same or better than the “junk” stuff per se that you normally get for very cheap?
In some ways too I think most people would still buy the unhealthy alternatives even if they were more expensive. From my observations anyways it generally is cheaper to buy the healthier stuff when it comes to food as long as you are willing to do things such as cooking the meals yourself as opposed to relying on pre-cooked or processed items. For myself financially I don’t go with a mindset such as “I’m thirsty and have only one dollar to spend” where if like soda is the only thing at that price then I o for that.
Instead, I usually have a consistent idea of the type of things I want and then find ways to get it within the budget. Usually that requires some sales research or even ways to do it myself for cheaper. You shouldn’t ever let money be the sole factor in dictating whether or not to live on like junk food or not as an example. You will ultimately pay more to recover from having like a bad lifestyle diet I would imagine where even in a financial mindset it makes no sense if the whole point is to save money here.
