Arbitrary Pricing Just To Get Rid of Stuff

While visiting a store today it looks like they had a ton of Halloween treats and items to clear out which is expected as you need to make room for Christmas items and not selling seasonal items during its peak could mean you may site on items that will expire and simply lose money. You would usually expect businesses to price items at say cost to just get rid of it. In this case it was funny to see as most items were listed for 99 cents. Great deal of course. I was thinking though this had to have been just a manger saying price it at that to hopefully get ride of it as they made their money during Halloween.

As crazy as it sounds, this happens a lot. I remember when I worked at a gaming store the mangers trusted my knowledge when it came to games and they had all these random titles they just wanted to get rid of and told me what to price them. I literally just threw out prices based on my knowledge of the games and what people want. Some items I knew even I would only buy if it was super cheap and so I would say “price this one at ten dollars, that one at fifteen” as an example.

Sure enough, my estimates worked and they flew off the shelf while overall they actually still made money. Shows you sometimes it’s not as complicated as you think where like here I just used my own consumer behavior to know what price would make me buy the items.
