Uncertainty Versus The Safer Route For Halloween Captures Today

Today was Halloween and there were a lot of things I was interested in potentially capturing. For example, just generally the scenery in terms of people wearing costumes, and as well there was a fireworks event. Now there was actually something that was supposed to be happening around the SkyTrain station, and they said it was supposed to happen around 8 o’clock with a bunch of people with costumes raving, I guess. I thought it would be interesting, but it seemed like they never showed up and time was tight.

And so I was thinking, if I waited any longer, I would actually miss the fireworks that were in a different city because it would take me at least half an hour to get down there. So I was debating, do I keep waiting for this event to potentially happen, which it was supposed to, or do I just take the train and go? Because I actually had one train where if I took that one, I would have about 10 minutes to spare, which is perfect for the setup. If not, in the very last one, I would make it just in the nick of time. So I was debating, do I really want to potentially ruin capturing the fireworks because I wouldn’t have time to set up, or do I wait for this where it could be just as, let’s just say, entertaining as something new to capture.
So I actually did decide to wait for the very last moment, but they never showed up. So unfortunately, I took the last train and left. So that was kind of a waste of time. I actually wasted about an hour seeing whether or not they showed up. And I actually did arrive to film the fireworks, but I was really rushed. So it started pretty much right when I got there and I didn’t really have time to set things up like a tripod and so forth. I still captured it, but it wasn’t as good as I hoped because I just didn’t have my setup, like my tripods and so forth.

And it just makes you think just in terms of risk and reward, I guess you can say. You could take the safer route, like in this case, I could have just gone earlier to the fireworks event and had everything set up and gotten a perfect shot. But then I wouldn’t have potentially gotten that other event if it happened. It’s one of those things where when it’s uncertain, do you take the safer route or do you risk it for the bigger reward? I guess in this case, it was better to take the safer route.
