There was a lot of talk recently of how the CRTC here in Canada has proposed that companies making over $10 million dollars a year will need to register with them and ultimately be regulated like every other broadcaster in the country. This is the result of an online steaming act bill that was passed not too long ago which was mostly advertised as a way to regulate large companies like a Netflix. But with this, apparently even someone that has a podcast would be required to abide by these new regulations.
That’s when I heard people comment how they are just going to stay small intentionally so that they can avoid all the bureaucracy. Because for them, even say one million a year is good enough to live comfortably. That’s probably easy to control too such as simply suspending any advertisement or merchandise where one can still actually do their broadcasts if they truly are passionate about it. That must be strange though to intentionally stunt the growth of something that you have a lot of success with as usually in these cases businesses would find ways to use the money as a form of expense to keep revenues at a certain level to avoid taxes as an example.
I don’t think I have ever met anyone that had this kind of thought when starting a business as growing in general is hard enough as it is for most with an industry landscape that is changing all the time.
