There has been a lot of news recently on whether or not Elon Musk will influence massive change on the platform Twitter now that he is the largest single shareholder in the company. I was personally surprised that he didn’t simply create his own platform. But that’s where some people mentioned that its difficult to create one and so it makes more sense to try and buyout an existing company for more chance of success per se. That makes for an interesting conversation I thought. When would you personally decide to buy an existing business to enter into a market versus creating something from ground up?
Assuming money was no issue, I think for myself it would come down to whether or not that business pretty much has everything that I would have wanted to do with a particular venture. For example, if it was a restaurant that pretty much served the exact type of things I wanted to offer, at a location I would have stationed in as well then it can just make more sense to pay the money so that the focus is to simply keep the business growing with your personal touches.
If it was a unique idea where it doesn’t seem like anyone else is really doing where the existing user-base may or may not support the idea then it may make more sense to start from scratch regardless if it is more difficult. Imagine taking over a burger restaurant to then try and introduce dim sum items as that was your original ambition as an example.
