Talking about getting a camera from yesterday and the idea of adjusting my workflow for something completely different it reminded me of a story I saw about someone who was successful as what he does but refused to change. This person essentially created videos for his business where through free tutorials and product comparisons he is able to redirect people to his online store to make purchases. He has been doing it for years too and as you can imagine as time went on his gear started to die. So time to just buy something new right?
Apparently for himself he actually went through a few cameras and each time he would specifically hunt down for the exact model that he used. This meant going to places like Ebay and buying second hand as well. The reason for it was because he said he didn’t want to have to re-learn things like the camera menus on a new camera. While he is still going strong one thing that is very apparent is that visually his work doesn’t look as professional as time went on. Therefore he actually hasn’t grown that much but instead relies on the same people to hopefully spread the word about his business.
For situations like this I think it’s better to learn the stuff as you need to have all the competitive advantage you can get. It’s different if there was say an actual logistical reason on why you can’t use the newer items. But if the reason is only because you don’t want to learn new things it’s almost like you are rolling out the red carpet for others to go ahead of you. Besides, learning new stuff can be fun.
