I was thinking as today a person was telling me how their child was learning about three different languages when he is only in grade one. As well, he will also be going to summer school to continue with this. That sounds great of course as the more languages you know the better. But in this case there was one thing that was obvious where the child’s English communication skills seemed to be behind compared to what most other children are at. For example, being unable to pronounce certain words.
This is a disadvantage as they do live in a country where English is the dominant language. It makes you think of other skills you learn in life as well where is it better to know a little bit of everything per se or is it better to focus on core skills and be the best at that? It’s perfectly doable to speak multiple languages fluently of course. But in cases like these where it’s evident that it is hindering the person’s performance on a key skill that will be integral to their future the trade off doesn’t sound too wise.
This is different than exploring various topics and industries where it’s probably a disservice to yourself not to at least be aware of what’s out there. But if you are learning a lot of skills to the point where you can’t really master the one that you will need the most, again it might be a good sign to start focusing on specific categories. I would imagine you would save money too where if someone is learning slower because they are taking on too much at once that means they will need to invest more time and money into it.
