With all that talk about student loan debt forgiveness recently one interesting topic was how people were wondering where the money is going to come from to pay off these loans where the answer doesn’t seem clear. In the end, the organization who would receive payments end up getting money one way or another to the point where some people are suggesting it’s major optics where it looks like people are being helped when in reality it’s a way to transfer money to these large organizations.
The TV show the Simpsons had a funny episode of rewording items where people think it’s great. In that episode, Lisa Simpson was the US president who had to raise taxes and to make people okay with it they worded the announcement as a “temporary refund adjustment”. It kind of makes you wonder if that is in some ways true here in the sense of the average person will have to pay the bill still whereas the institution that owns the debt will be guaranteed payment quicker now.
Imagine a business doing something like that. For example, maybe you have a yearly membership and one day they said they will give everyone a free $20 gift card during these tough times. But then later they end up increasing the membership fee by $20 as well where in the end you will be paying more each year regardless of that one time free $20. If this is all accurate too I guess It shows why PR and communication companies are paid a lot where you can make anything sound good with the right words.
