Today I was reading a great quote from Wayne Gretzky who is one of the all-time greats in hockey which I thought was relatable to an entrepreneur. People often ask him what his secret or philosophy is when it comes to playing hockey which enables him to score so many goals. In this case, he said something along the lines of “I skate to where the puck is going, not where it has been.”
What a great quote as many times when it comes to creating a business idea people literally see a trend and then jump all in to hopefully make it big. However, many times one finds out that the trend has long gone elsewhere and so they ended up spending all that time and money for nothing. That is tricky huh in terms of trying to determine if it’s good time to jump into something or observe where the next trend is starting. Unlike a hockey game, there are so many other things that can happen elsewhere. I think my analogy would be in a business world it’s almost like paying attention to multiple sports at once such as hockey, baseball and basketball while trying to figure out who is going to score next in their respective sport so that you can cheer them on right on time.
But regardless that is a good perspective to think about as you need to try and figure out where trends are going. Otherwise you will constantly be trying to chase the next big thing and end up just using up all your energy for no return.
