This got me thinking today as a person was expressing how they thought they were overbilled for some services in which they proceeded to contact the company to correct. The interesting thing was how the charge was actually almost a month old. The main reason why they didn’t pick up on it sooner is because they only check their credit card statements once a month in order to pay off the balance.
That’s good where they pay everything off. With that said, it’s a good idea to check on your current billing charges frequently because of situations like these where there could be a billing error. Imagine buying something at the grocery store where you are overbilled by maybe $2. That’s going to be hard to correct if you find out almost a month later of the error. You probably won’t even notice too as most will just scan the statement and check it off as a valid purchase since they remember shopping that day.
I tend to check it every three days or so to make sure any purchases I made are displayed correctly. It also helps with spending habits too where if you tend to spend too much on luxury or comfort items seeing it tally up can encourage you to re-think if that’s enough for the month I find. It should be easier to do nowadays as well since you can check your transactions through your bank online whenever you please versus having to wait in the mail for a monthly paper statement.
