This was interesting to think about when it comes to memes as they are usually something entertaining to address a certain issue in an entertaining way. For example, re-using well known characters and scenes to make then say something different. But many times these memes portray companies in a negative light in which they could either try and copyright takedown everything to try and maintain their desired image or some actually just accept it as an Internet phenomenon and let it be.
This wasn’t a meme in the typical sense but it was getting spread around to talk about unhealthy products in which case it was that chocolate spread Nutella. I know there are quite a few people who go through tons of those products and so this image kind of gave a visual representation of the ingredients and you can imagine how shocked a lot of people were. It’s the amount of oil and sugar that shocks most.
While that should make companies worried as a lot of health conscious people would likely try to find something healthier, there were a lot of people just saying how they don’t care as they don’t eat that for health reasons. Fair point right? With that said, even people who don’t eat the product are being sent this image whenever a topic of the food people buy comes up. So like there, would you be okay with this as the company?
I can’t imagine there is much to be done as almost anything that could be down to control it would probably make people share it even more. At that point it seems better to just embrace it in a sense where one’s product is big enough to be referenced in pop culture all the time huh? You could argue this could bring them more business too unless they start advertising their product as a highly nutritious product compared to say eating vegetables or something.
