Fascinating story I read that dealt with a very successful YouTube creator named Dream who created primarily gameplay videos of the video game Minecraft and has over thirty-one million subscribers. He never revealed his face but instead always wore a smiley face mask of sort to conceal his identity. Recently he decided to reveal what he looked like and the response it generated was interesting as it affected his growth.
From what I gather, people were apparently calling him ugly or comparing him to other people to the point where people were no longer just judging him based on his work but rather his appearance. I guess in older times it would be like people not believing say a woman could do a certain task and so they try to hide their identity while just producing the work. In the end, he says he is going back to covering his face.
It’s actually a serious topic too in many ways when it comes to a business strategy of sort. For example, I have read plenty of stories where the CEO of an online business was actually a teenager still in high school but there is no reference of it anywhere and nor do the customers care as long as they get their orders delivered. Like there, I can imagine a lot of people would be cynical and skeptical in doing business with company knowing it’s run by a teenager even though it didn’t matter. Better to not even mention it in that case huh?
Or writing can be a great example too where if a person is great at writing stories or reports then that’s all that should matter correct? But like there, showing a face could actually make people pre-judge or criticize the author in an unbiased way. It’s unfortunate but these things can have an affect to one’s business even though it shouldn’t.
