Tomorrow is Canada Day, and I was doing some research on places to visit. As expected, there are plenty of events like concerts, and many locations are hosting fireworks displays at night. What caught my attention, however, was a drone show happening in New Westminster. I almost overlooked it because it wasn’t heavily promoted, and drone shows still aren’t that common as a replacement for traditional fireworks.
What surprised me most was how little information was available about the show. There were no details on how long it would last, who was organizing it, or any other specifics that would help people plan their evening. This raises an interesting question: when hosting an event, should organizers include those key details to help people get excited and make plans? It makes me wonder if the lack of information suggests the show is relatively small scale.
Many other places are still doing fireworks, so a drone show could be a great way to differentiate yourself and draw crowds. I was also surprised that I couldn’t find any companies publicly promoting that they’re behind the New Westminster drone show. From a local business perspective, that feels like a missed opportunity to promote local sponsors while driving more people to the event.
Overall, if a city is trying to promote local businesses and festivities, holding back on details like this might be counterproductive. It could simply be that the event isn’t big enough to justify heavy promotion but either way, it feels like a missed opportunity.
