So here in Canada apparently this online streaming bill called bill C-11 will be placed into law after a bunch of revisions. Essentially, online platforms such as a Netflix or a YouTube will now have to promote a certain amount of Canadian content which some see as a good and bad thing. The good view would be if you are a Canadian then technically this could increase visibility for Canadian made work. However, there isn’t exactly a rule on who specifically this support should be provided to.
Imagine forcing a law that mandates a company must donate five percent of its profits to charity. While that sounds good, there is nothing stopping one from just donating it to a charity that is in some way connected to the company itself. Or it could be too that they will just give it to someone that doesn’t really need it and hence took away the funds that could have been used for something else.
One argument over this bill specifically was how there was criticism that it would affect the average individual who simply posts content online. However, a clause was added it seems to ensure that user generated content itself would be safe. But it will be fascinating to see what companies will do with this being a law to operate here in Canada.
