This was a different approach as the other day a person approached me as he wanted me to try one of his new services which he thought I may be interested in. While that wasn’t too surprising what was a bit different was that he explicitly said his hopes was that I would tell people about the service as his main motivation for letting me try it. You usually know this ahead of time whenever companies approach you with these kinds of things but it was an interesting twist to see someone actually say it.
It makes me wonder do you actually value it when someone is that blunt and direct with you on why they are approaching you? Does it make you more inclined to respond to the offer as well as opposed to people who use things like small talk or flattery? I know for myself I would prefer this than someone just making stuff up such as them claiming they are a big fan of your work when really they haven’t even seen one bit of it.
On the other hand it may make me feel as if they are just playing the numbers game where they are contacting a bunch of people that they think can help them in hopes someone will respond. So if they are treating me like a number in that sense I may be inclined to treat it like a spam e-mail for the day too. I guess you can be blunt but it needs to be personable still too. Imagine a child raising money for school just bluntly telling you that they just want your money and that’s that.
