The other day I saw all these advertisements from companies that taught people how to become a sought-out expert in your field for media campaigns in an effort to create a business out of this fame. For example, with your publicity you could potentially sell products or charge high speaking fees at various events. It’s funny as in the beginning I figured people literally just do what they do professionally and if someone needs a local expert it would be no different than looking up some directory, making calls and then seeing if one would agree. For example, a professional athlete simply becoming really good at what they do where people will then search for them when needing expertise in a subject.
But in this case it’s pretty much people trying to build a business primarily in being a public expert where they aren’t necessarily the best in their field but they do so much marketing and branding for themselves to the point where when one searches for an expert in their field they will be one of the first ones to come up. As well, they actually pitch producers to have them one with segment ideas where at minimum they would at least come to mind if they need someone like them in the future.
My own personal experience when I have been asked to be an expert on a subject is I was simply discovered and searched out because of my work. Thinking back, it does make me wonder how it would have been if I actually tried to say pitch more places to speak on. To me it was more for fun and to hopefully help a wider audience. But to change that more to a business mindset would have been interesting.
