Spending So Much For A Trivial Time Saver

financial literacy

I was reading all about that Apple Watch today where one big news was that its solid gold version costs over $10,000. That seems ludicrous, but someone will buy it. I kind of struggled as to who this item targets in many ways and its general value. To my understanding, it is targeting people who find that taking your phone out of your pocket to check the time is too tedious. Therefore, this watch solves that.

To make it even less appealing to me personally, this watch apparently requires a user to have an iPhone. Would spending $350 be worth it in this case to save maybe a few seconds each day? Of course, I am inclined to say it’s not productivity why one would buy this as opposed to a status symbol of sort. If the watch was capable as a standalone product then maybe that would seem a little more reasonable.

In many ways I think this is like brand loyalty type of marketing where one would tend buy things largely because they want to support their favorite company. Nothing wrong with that of course if you have the disposable income and it make you happy. It does make me weary though as this kind of falls in-line with electronics that get very minor technical upgrades and at the same time they charge an arm and a leg for it. Even I will be surprised if there are crazy line ups for this watch when it comes out.
