I was reading some interesting stories about people alleging that they have lost employment or business opportunities with places they normally have a good working relationship with because of stuff they did outside of work. In a lot of these stories, it was people attending events or speaking about issues that are currently very divisive such as the war around the world. It’s one of those no-win situations too as regardless of what one says you will have a lot of people disliking one’s opinion.
As you can imagine, in a lot of these cases companies pretty much immediately let go a lot of these people where I can only imagine is because they don’t want to deal with the PR issue of employee someone who has controversial views that go against a large percentage of the audience. There are probably legalities to that, but it makes you wonder can you truly have a private life in this regard when you work for a company?
Especially with jobs where you are a public figure of sort, I can imagine how you pretty much can’t just do anything like an average person would during your private life. One guy could probably get drunk where you see them on the streets spewing offensive rhetoric as many would just view them as being drunk. But for public figures and people within a high position of a business this stuff will probably follow them forever. That would ultimately mean you still have to think of your work and business whenever you are out in the public too. Is that something you think about when choosing your line of work and business?
