Pricing Your Used Items

Sunny drone shot

I was just thinking today that I wanted to upgrade my camera to another model as there appeared to be something coming out that would suit my current needs a little better. One of the first things that came to mind is how much I could sell my old camera for which I would then put towards the new one. I usually find these types of scenarios as one of the most difficult in terms of trying to price.

You usually get torn between pricing it based on what you paid for it originally versus how fast you want to dump the item. As well, the condition of the item of course. In some ways just bartering the item for something else you need can be a lot easier. In terms of an actual price, I usually try to price it at about 30% cheaper than presently buying the item brand new from a store.

One factor why I wouldn’t go extremely cheaper initially too is because you have to factor in that if people bought it new from a store that they would also have to pay a sales tax on the item. Here for example that means an additional 12%. So buying it used from myself in this case would mean they are getting the item for 42% less. Not too shabby when you think about it.

Sometimes you have to explicitly indicate that to people too as you may be surprised at how many people overlook that factor. Maybe I may even just try using an auction site where you can just allow people o pay what they think it is worth.
