It was fascinating to see an executive make a decision recently on who to contract for an event where the only real thing they had to go by is the work posted publicly by each person online. Now you would think the person with the best showcase would win right? That wasn’t the case. It seemed like the ultimate factor in the end was how one person had a picture of his family in his about us bio. Since the executive had a family this resonated with her and so this influenced her to choose him over others.
That doesn’t seem fair in many huh? However, that is the reality of the situation many times where when people in the position of power often make bias emotional decisions like those which is common in life in general. That brings up the topic how many times on things like business bios you often read snippets on what type of hobbies the person enjoys or if they have pets. Almost sounds like a dating ad of sort right? But if the person doing the hiring happens to also participate or share similar lifestyle choices then odds are that will make them think that they are hiring say someone like themselves which would be a good fit.
So never just sway off the fact that it happens to the point where you just completely ignore say listing some details about your life outside of work. Obviously you don’t need to list a biography of all your life interests, but throwing little details of your hobbies and family upbringings can give you an advantage.
