Giving Too Little or Too Much Power To Workers

I often watch wrestling for fun and one business topic that comes up is how in order for promotions to attract talent many companies offer the talent the ability to have creative control over their characters versus simply following what the company wants. That’s very attractive for those who are trying to build a brand as you can essentially make yourself look really good to try and command better deals. At the same time, this can be a disaster for a company if a talent insists that things must be done a certain way which isn’t best for business.

Imagine making a movie where you really want an actor for their star power except they have control of what the character does and says in the actual movie. Literally, even if the plot would be so much better seeing say the character struggle the actor could then say they don’t like that as they want to remain looking tough. That’s not good.

On the flipside, not giving the talent any power or input into the work they do can equally be bad as no one wants to be a mindless worker or be put in a position where they do work that is so bad or demeaning that their value will be nothing if they ever leave the company. The balanced approach is the best way of course where you should always genuinely be open minded to listen but at the same time it is safer to have all the business control as it is your investment.
