Giving Away Free Stuff As A Prize Illusion

Today while using the app for a supermarket there was this little game you could play for free as it was a digital scratch and win game. If you match three items then you win a prize. So, why not? I played the game and it said I won a free PC flavoured mini Poppadoms. Not sure what that was, but it was free and so I went to gab one. As I arrived at the store to look for the item I noticed there were a few people looking for the exact same item. I guess the win rate for this thing must have been like 100% as a product promotion.

I was thinking too, in the past they normally just listed the products that they wanted to offer people for free on the app. But with that said, is it better marketing to just make people think they won a prize like here to further encourage them to go to the store and get it? In many ways, I think that may actually be wiser as people like to feel that they have some unique or special. I asked another person who used the same app and sure enough they won the exact same thing.

It’s almost like signing up for a mailing list and then getting a generic e-mail on how they won a free bag of chips on a site where in many of those cases people buy more to try and get free shipping as an example. If it was just on the site saying free bag of chip it wouldn’t have the same feeling for many to take action as it doesn’t look special per se.
