Converting Free Users To Paying Users

I was working on a project for fun recently and because this wasn’t exactly a for profit venture I wanted to try and use as many free resources as possible. Sure enough, I was able to get virtually everything for free. One interesting note I was reading was that one of the companies explicitly told people that they offered free service in hopes that maybe in the future they will become a paying customer.

That must be so risky and scary I thought in terms of having a sustainable business model. I can imagine it’s like telling people you will give them free Internet access services with certain limits and then hope that they will actually pay for it because they are so happy with it. Like with that, what are the odds that you will have enough people that would want to pay money all of a sudden?
