Catering To Extremely Demanding Customers or Supportive Ones

Imagine this. You run restaurant where it is your passion to serve the best food to make people happy. You of course meet a variety of people where some will like it and some don’t. But usually in a customer service based business you need to adopt the customer is always right mentality. So even if they are really demanding you should try your best to cater to them. Or should you? That was a question that I heard today.

Usually in your personal life they say you should cut ties with people that always try to drag you down. Instead, you should invest your time and energy with those who support and encourage you. So that was the question brought up for a business due to a recent situation. So imagine in your restaurant there is someone who is being very picky about you making the food look a certain way. Imagine something like wanting a heart shaped omelet. They even go as far as saying if you don’t they will never return to your restaurant.

Now add in the factor that this is a regular customer. But again, every time they come they have these really odd and demanding requests. They make it pretty clear too that they don’t really care about you as a business so you can go bankrupt the next day and they will just go elsewhere. Like there would you actually keep catering to this person with that mindset or just focus on people that actually do care about wanting you to receive the best just like you do for them?

To me the answer isn’t as clear cut there. For a large corporation that deals with millions a day I can see them just saying no if the request isn’t part of their policy where everyone is treated the same. At the same time usually when a business is that big they do treat people as just a number so it’s kind of going both ways. But for a small local business I guess it’s a little trickier. They are more likely to need the money but is it worth it for people like that?
