A friend was telling me recently that he was going to travel to Disneyland with his family for a vacation and I mentioned how he should forget to take a lot of pictures. That then brought up the topic if he had a good camera and he apparently had a DSLR. However, he said he was just going to use his phone as he didn’t want to carry around too much stuff.
That brings up the ever so important topic of buying high end gear that you feel is too cumbersome to use on a regular basis. Kitchen appliances are a very common example such as people buying an expensive juicer that they never actually end up using much at all due to the clean up time of the machines. Is there a way to actually deal with this if you don’t have much self-control to really think if you need and will use something that fancy?
In these examples it may actually be better to just rent or borrow these types of gear when you feel you will use it on a specific day. Usually, one factor that will determine if I should buy an expensive item or not is if I will use it to somehow make more money. For example, if I am buying an expensive camera then I better be using it for some kind of media business or that it will increase my work quality which in turn increases my income. I find that alone stops me from just buying new shiny toys per se that I will never fully use.
