This was an interesting tactic as this year I was evaluating some AI platforms to see what would be good to use to increase productivity and some of them had a fee attached to the service where after adding everything to a cart I decided to hold off. Similar to a lot of e-commerce sites, this triggers an automated response such as how “you left something at your cart” in hopes to push you to make the sale. In this case the platform offered a forty percent off coupon and said that it expired in two hours.
That’s a substantial savings for anyone that was on the fence. But, I didn’t budge. Out of curiosity I decided to enter the code that was provided the next day and sure enough the code actually still worked if I really wanted to complete the transaction. This made me think how the sales pitch was misleading in the same manner as how some stores say they are having a closing out sale when in reality it’s just a normal day in business. That type of wording makes people think if they don’t buy it soon it could be gone.
I would assume in most places there would be some kind of law that would forbid these types of practices. In an online environment people probably won’t really notice it as much to make any kind of complaint. Not a recommended thing to do for a business.
