I was reading about the announcement today how Meta is releasing this Tamagotchi type of device where people are expected to carry this around and use it as an AI assistant of sort that they can talk to. In many ways it feels like stuff that are already in existence with the tech but they simply crammed in in a portable form that they feel a lot of average people will adopt. It made me wonder if I was ready to accept carry an AI assistant like this around.
In general, I do use AI programs on my phone for general searches nowadays as I find it faster than manually using the search engine and scrolling through what may be related. Especially when you are on the go these AI programs can just read out a summary. But to carry around a dedicated device like this feels more like a lifestyle item and I don’t think any company has convinced me yet that that I should commit to their ecosystem in this way.
Whether its data privacy or cost, it’s something that can tie you down to the business if you get used to it. So that makes me weary about committing to dedicated products like these currently.
