“Travelers Diarrhea Survey – Enter for a chance to win $100”

I kid you not folks. That was the exact subject title of an e-mail that I received. I occasionally get these e-mails from the Consumer Research Panel where they want you to take surveys about various topics and in return they would enter you into a contest for a chance to win some money. Normally the topics are a bit more down to earth as it dealt with things such as your buying habits, but seeing a subject title with the word “Diarrhea” was a bit much. On top of that, while reading the description it indicated that you would have to view various audio-visual clips for the survey. As you may have guessed, I didn’t actually go through in doing the survey. It sounded like a bit too much for me only to be entered into chance to win a small amount of money. Here is a screenshot of the mail I got and also a copy and paste job of the e-mail minus the contact and url details:

Hello Alan Yu,

The Consumer Research Centre is currently conducting an online study on the topic of Traveler’s Health.

The study should take approximately 10 minutes to complete and all qualified completes will be entered into a draw to win one of three (3) $100 incentives. We will also have a draw for one early bird prize of $100 from those who complete the survey on or before December 11, 2006.

Please complete the survey as soon as possible as the study will close when we reach our required number of participants.

You will be asked to view several audio-visual clips for the survey. Please ensure that your browser has the compatible plug-ins. We recommend using Internet Explorer for this survey. To begin, simply copy and paste the English or French web address into the address bar of your internet browser.

Thank you in advance for your participation. Should you have any problems with the survey, please e-mail: xxxxxxx@consumerresearchpanel.ca. We look forward to hearing from you!

Best Regards,
The Consumer Research Panel

It’s not exactly my cup of tea in terms of making money, but I guess there must be others out there who would be interested in it.
