The Business of Hiding Social Media Likes

I found it interesting how in recent times companies and platforms such as Instagram are testing out the idea of getting rid of items that are normally a way to demonstrate social proof which people rely on to sell businesses on the idea that they have a huge following. For many platforms how many people like or heart your post or content is something many strive for as it often gives people the satisfaction that people appreciate their work. That also often creates commercial opportunities as well.

But on the dark side people can often chase for these kinds of attention and approval in an unhealthy way to the point where people will to extreme and dangerous lengths to do so. So because of that some companies are opting to hide this kind of information publicly. Many argue that is killing their business as without this they can’t prove to companies that they have a large and actively engaged audience. You would think that would be bad for the platform as well where they would want as much engagement as possible.

But I suppose like here sometimes the social responsibility you have as a large business is just more important in the long right huh? I think it is a good thing overall in these examples. It takes some guts for a business to actually do that as well which I would imagine can actually work in their favor. Everyone loves to support businesses that do the right thing too right?
