Taking Advantage of Other Options Around You

Today, the FIFA celebrations continued as Canada officially beat South Africa, so we’re moving on in the tournament. Even though the game wasn’t hosted here locally, there were plenty of spots around the city where fans could watch on big screens. One thing that stood out to me was the screening at Granville Island — it had limited capacity, so many people who couldn’t get in were left standing outside the fences.

Most of them couldn’t actually see the screen properly, yet they stayed there anyway, craning for whatever tiny glimpse they could get. It made me wonder — if you really want to watch the game, wouldn’t it be better to just go to a restaurant with a screen, or even watch it on your phone? With such a poor view, there didn’t seem to be much point in standing there.

But I guess that’s the thing: sometimes in the moment, you don’t think about the smarter alternatives. Of course, there’s something to be said for wanting to be part of the atmosphere. The energy from the crowd can make the experience exciting, much like attending a live event. Still, it’s interesting how many people chose to stand around seeing almost nothing instead of taking a better option.

Maybe it was simply because it was free, so they felt they should take advantage of it. At the same time, if you’re organizing these events, it might be worth considering more creative solutions. Even with limited indoor capacity, you could set up projectors pointing at nearby walls so more people could watch.

It might not be perfect, but you’d include way more fans without needing a giant stadium. There’s a lot of potential for creativity in getting as many people involved as possible. Either way, it’s great that Canada is moving forward in the tournament.
