Taking A Pay Cut To Work From Home

grouse mountain eye of the wind vancouver

With more companies having their employees work from home due to the pandemic it was interesting reading how people that have been permanently set to work at home moving forward can expect a pay decrease as they aren’t required to travel to work. I suppose that would make sense in many ways. But at the same time if you were given the choice would you opt to work from home if it meant a pay cut?

For example purposes let’s say you normally make $50,000 a year and now that you work from home your pay is reduced to $45,000 a year. Would you actually choose to make $5000 less if that meant have the comfort and convenience in doing everything at your own place? This could be jobs such as doing the company’s accounting work or remotely maintaining a website.

I personally think I would if the position didn’t really require me to be on-site. $5000 in this case sounds like a lot of course. But the sheer savings in time to travel can be spent doing something else if you wanted to such as creating a side business. Especially if you normally commute say two hours a day I would imagine it would be more enticing. One thing good during this pandemic is how people are realizing that a ton of jobs can be done from home.
