Sold Out Perception or Sell As Many As You Can

With the Nintendo Switch 2 launch recently apparently, it did really well over the past few days as it is being reported that the console sold well over 3 million so far. This is despite it having a very high price tag. I did read before on how it was Nintendo’s strategy to try and sell as many consoles as possible early with an abundant supply as a precaution if the tariff wars around the world take place which could hinder the sales of the systems.

At the same time, some people were saying they failed because the system didn’t sell out as many times that is the marketing result you want to be able to gloat about. Would you rather as a company sell say 2 million units and have all the buzz of it being sold out to hype up future releases or would you rather just sell as much as you can like here? Because many times companies do limit supply to give the perception of demand and to continue the hype.

Technically it’s probably better to sell as many as possible in this case since their income is attached to selling more games as an example and people need the system to do that. If you are talking about items like a T-shirt then that could be debatable based on your marketing intent.
