Prolonging Damaged Items

So today I saw that the leather office chair I have been using for a long time has a rip on the seat. While the thoughts that it may be time to buy a new one came to mind, in the spirit of always wanting to save money I was just thinking of doing something as straight forward such as putting black tape over the rip. It’s not like the aesthetics bothers me as you are for the most part not even seeing it since you would be siting on it.

Kind of similar to a TV where I would usually only replace it if it is truly nonfunctional. Just kind of makes me curious how much longer it will last this way. If anything, it gives me time and patients to only buy a new one if I see a really good deal.
