Pretending To Be A Big Company When You Are Not

tiny house expedition

Usually when people start some kind of business a common thing I see is that people feel they must portray that they have hundreds of employees as if they are an established corporation because the thought is if people see you are just a small business or sole entrepreneur then one won’t be taken seriously. That’s what got me thinking as I recently encountered a scenario where I knew that the business was operate by one person.

However, in communicating with me the person tried to write all of his e-mails and messages as if he has a fully staffed business of customer service agents and managers. So a simple question would turn into something like “I’ll pass on your message to creative department” when literally I know for a fact it’s just the one guy running the business. Just try to envision that if the person was doing that with a phone where they pretend to pass the line to another department.

I think that is a very old school mentality as nowadays a ton of people embrace independently owned businesses or small family ones. They will even understand if your rates are a bit higher where ultimately it’s can you give them a better service that they can trust. Like saying I would rather trust that solo tech whiz that is reputable in fixing a computer guaranteed for $80 versus $60 in a big brand box store where the result is mixed. There is no need for the person to pretend they are a big corporation.
