This was an interesting thought as the other day a person was telling me how the company he has worked for years treated him very well. Essentially it sounded like he pretty much has a retirement career with them. But one thing that surprised me was that he wasn’t even an employee for them. Instead he was an independent contractor who has to bill them every week or so and he was saying how he prefers it that way.
The reason being was that he felt he got more benefits and freedom this way such as being able to write off a lot of expenses such as the use of his vehicle. Time wise it is more about getting the job done too. I asked if things like getting company benefits isn’t a huge loss for him then but apparently he was covered as his wife works a tradition job and gets those for the family.
But that is an interesting thought in terms of a preferred type of employment though given the choice. Most of us are taught to always go as the employee route where hopefully the company will take care of you in every way. Here the person works full time for them but has more flexibility. This does mean more accounting work of course. But would you prefer to be an independent contractor given the choice too?
