Potential Transit Strike And Public Reliance

For as long as I have known people are usually encouraged to take public transit as an environmentally friendly option to reduce cars on the road while it’s also touted as a way to help people save a lot of money. Recently it was announced by a workers union that they may go on strike tomorrow if their demands aren’t taken seriously. While this usually meant bus services, apparently everything from the SeaBus to the SkyTrain may be held hostage as well.

That would mean everyone who literally ditched the car in favor of transit will either have to pay expensive taxi fees to get to work or they may not even be able to make it. With that said, on an official channel they did say quote “We expect SkyTrain (Expo, Canada Line, and Millennium Line) and West Coast Express to operate as normal tomorrow. At this time, CUPE Local 4500 can only legally picket bus and SeaBus”

It makes you think if you should ever just rely on public transit versus having the option to use your own vehicle. Imagine never even bothering to learn how to drive as well because you just assume transit will always be available as if it was an essential service. The few days of strikes could easily cost way more than using your own vehicle if you had to Uber yourself to work for weeks. Always try and have as many different type of skills and resources without the need to rely on third party services I suppose.
