Paying Audience Members Money As Employees To Avoid COVID Restrictions

With a lot of businesses being restricted from having large groups of people one of the most notable changes that you may have noticed are TV shows that normally have a live audience. With these restrictions people have opted to either not tape with an audience present or some have incorporated audience in the form of web conferencing software as you see them in the background on a screen. With that in mind it was interesting reading how the show SNL was still using a real audience except they paid them to attend.

Why would they do that? Apparently the COVID restrictions in the area state that it should only be employees of the production that should be present. So by paying the audience members to attend they have in a sense turned them into a contractor of sort which means they are now part of the production. I guess you can say that is an interesting workaround to the laws. From what I read too they got paid quite generously in the figure around $150 to attend the show.

It makes me wonder if people would actually do that in other ways to the point where lawmakers would have to re-write the rules somehow. Although I honestly can’t see how overall without it essentially saying something like it has to be a full time employee or something along those lines. Which of course wouldn’t work as tons of places use independent contractors an example.
