Odd New Normal For Confidential Film Scripts And Actor Self Tape Auditions

Sunny drone shot

Before this pandemic in the film world for an actor the process in hiring a talent would usually involve a casting director deciding which talent they want to see for a role where they are then given a script from the show or project to go in-person and do a read. This session is taped where it is then sent to the actual production or agency that is doing the hiring to decide who they want to use. But with this new normal everyone is trying to do things remotely from home.

In this case, many actors are required to do the taping themselves now and then send it in. When it comes to taping a scene usually in-person the actor is given a reader who is essentially their scene partner that they act off of. When doing things virtually the talent now must try and find a person to read for them. The popular method seems to be having the reader in a video call in the background as the actor then tapes themselves.

But this made me wonder how it will work in the long-term. Because sometimes project have really strict NDA’s for highly anticipated releases. So usually when an actor auditions for these roles these scripts are supposed to be for their eyes only. But with this pandemic scenario if people are supposed to find readers themselves that should technically mean you are going to show them the script to read which you were not supposed to let anyone know about. So kind of an issue huh?

It makes me wonder how businesses will adapt in that way where I can only imagine that like in this case they are going have to provide the readers for the actors. Or more long term would be to have an actual interview process of sort that is fully digital live where people join in like most conference calling software.
