There was a lot of news today as one of Canada’s biggest cell phone service provider went down and you can imagine how much chaos that created for people. Millions of people went through a lot of the day not being able to use cell phone services. Many people nowadays too have completely ditched the landline at home. So without their cell phone there is no way to contact people by phone.
From what I read the downtown was due to a software upgrade. But despite that even the management of the company were saying that wasn’t acceptable on their end. This is one of those things where people just expect it to work for the most part. Therefore, not many people have some kind of backup for downtimes like this. For some people it sparked conversation on how there should be federal intervention for downtimes this massive.
I think either way you should always have alternative ways to communicate. For example, e-mails and video conferencing should still be an option in many cases with wi-fi and internet access readily available. It makes you wonder if a company could ever afford to offer compensation to customers in this case considering how massive the situation is.
