Here in Canada the tax deadline is slowly approaching and one thing I did noticed are the advertisements from accountants on how for a fee they will do your taxes for you. These are usually common in malls where companies like HR Block have kiosks where you can simply do your taxes right there and then. But what got me thinking is that the service fee for a lot of these places were advertised as costing about $20 to $30 to do one’s taxes for them.
This is virtually the same price for a lot of retail tax software when I think about it. But with that in mind, with the price being so similar in this case would you actually opt to have a real person do your taxes for you in this case? In the past I would think most people would say yes in getting a professional to do it versus yourself. But oddly enough, nowadays so many people are actually afraid of things like identity theft where they are less trusting in handing off personal information to others.
I would imagine the stigma would be truer if you weren’t a large business but rather a sole proprietor as well. I think for myself if it was really basic tax stuff I would still opt to do it myself. But if it was very complex corporate tax for the same price here I would lean towards hiring the professional.
