How Good You Are Versus How Known You Are

Usually when it comes to landing some kind of job or say business opportunity you would think it is all about skill. However, for certain types of jobs many types people want to hire those who they feel are well known enough to the point where the company will automatically get exposure for its business as it is essentially free advertising just by hiring the more popular person instead. This is mostly true in say entertainment fields as companies want as many eyeballs on their offerings as possible and big status people provide that.

So that brings up the conversation on how while many of us constantly build our skills technically to be able to do the best we can you can’t overlook the important of building a brand for yourself per se. This doesn’t mean you need to go full PR mode as if you are some celebrity. It could mean remembering to take pictures or keep records of important public events such as winning awards or being featured in the media is it will help you to stand out from just being a regular worker.

I remember some stories of people where they were super successful before but never really bothered to build a brand for their work. When things died down they didn’t really have exciting materials to show and so they ended up getting chewed up by the younger folks. Again, you don’t have to go crazy. But remember when you are experiencing all the success remember to try and document it as well with what you can for future use as social proof.
