This got me thinking recently as I was reading how there was a person that was doing very well for themselves in being an independent producer where because of that success they were approached by larger companies to join them as they felt the person could help them grow. Often for smaller people this can be very enticing to have the security and support of a large corporation versus struggling to compete with them.
One of the fear the person had was that they would lose all creative control where they would just be a do as your told type of person. As well, potentially being told what they can and can’t say. But the person apparently mentioned before where if that ever happens, they will simply leave. As time went on, that appeared to have been what happened where the began to tell the person how they can’t say certain things that would be deemed controversial as an example. As a result, they left the company pretty quickly.
Usually for most people you would dread having to quit a company as that could mean having to scramble to find a replacement immediately to be able to support yourself financially. But in this case the person literally just went back to what they did before and was now even stronger since more people are aware of them.
I suppose that’d a smart way to approach it where if you are going to join a bigger in a scenario where they aren’t specifically buying you and your company out then having the ability to go back to your old business makes it a win-win in many ways.
