Having Skills That Fade Without Practice

Today I was helping a person with some computer tasks which seem very basic such as opening up applications and how write in documents. The interesting scenario here is that the person is retired and used to actually be able to type really fast while using these applications with ease. However, going years without using a desktop computer or laptop has not surprisingly faded their skills away.

Throughout the entire time the person was remembering how all this stuff used to be so easy and so they felt kind of ashamed that they no longer had those skills. I’m sure it’s still there where once someone gets going again they will slowly regain those skills. It reminds me of the story I saw before of a war veteran who hopped into a fighter jet and flew it as if he didn’t miss a beat all these years.

With that thought, do you ever think how if you invested all this time and money to learn a specific skill that going forward you will need to still invest some time or money into it occasionally to make sure you don’t lose it?
