Recently I was reading a bunch of news on how in the US there is going to be 5G networks available from wireless carriers which means faster data transfers on cell phones. To take advantage of this you would need a phone capable of it as well. I did actually plan to get a new phone next year since my contract expired. To my knowledge though these 5G phones will carry a heavy premium price where for the first year or so 5G probably won’t even be available in my area. So with that said and considering I usually only upgrade phones every 3 years or so would you actually pay the premium for the 5G feature?
In many ways I am inclined to say no where I would imagine after the first year or so virtually every handset will have that capability as a standard which means the prices will drop drastically. At the same time that could be say two years of not being able to take advantage of the higher speeds unless I decide to upgrade sooner than usual. Although that could make financial sense too.
Reason being is usually the high premiums you pay for the latest and greatest can actually get you say two other mid ranged items. So you could technically buy a mid-range phone now and another a year or two later for the same price and now you have two phones. Probably not as glamorous but it gets the job done for arguably cheaper as well.
