There was a debate today about how when you were looking for professional services at a free classified ads site like craigslist is just asking for trouble. While everyone usually advertises its services for a lot less than average, it is apparently more likely that it is a fraud of some sort. Someone then mentioned if you want to be safe you should just look up a source like the Yellow Pages as established companies usually advertise in it. Of course, a ton of people then chimed in how they found companies that were just as bad on that as well.
From a business perspective I can honestly say that I have seen both established and new business use both. It’s almost like the old debate I heard before how if you want to find qualified employees then you must use paid sites as oppose to looking for people on free classified ones. Even in that case I have seen both work just as well.
For finding services though I think it just comes down to researching the offers as thoroughly as possible. I would think an option like Craigslist will probably have way more options for you to choose from to sort out whereas a source like Yellow Pages, which requires some hefty fees to be listed, will usually have a smaller pool of large companies. Either way is no guarantee of the quality I’d say.
