Do You Think Things Thoroughly or Do You Simply Do It?

This is kind of a tricky topic that I was asked to divulge into as I think it really depends on the situation. The funny thing from my experience is that when it comes to say business I think a lot of people tend to think too much without actually doing something and when it comes to money or finance many people simply go ahead and splurge it without thinking too much at first. It’s kind of like one of those “why can’t you just combine your habits for both” type of thing.

In general, I believe that you have to combine the two to effectively make good productive decisions and I think the keyword is simply to simply focus on something. Even for myself, whenever I have a clear objective on what it is that I want, by simply focusing on that goal it naturally gets me to take action in doing something immediately to help accomplish it and at the same it keeps my thoughts and brainstorming time in check by not allowing me to constantly think about unnecessary “ifs, ands or buts” situations.

When it comes to most things, in my opinion the thinking part at first should simply be a one level needs, risk assessment and anticipation on what can happen and what you will do about it afterwards. With that, you do it and then depending on what happens you start a similar process again. By one level what I mean is say let’s pretend we need to commute to some place for an event during a busy traffic hour. For most people I would think the most productive thing to do if you really wanted to be thorough is to maybe listen to say the radio to see how bad it is and if there are any better routes to take. Aside from that, you would actually need to start going and see what happens from there.

You can stay at home a bit longer as maybe an accident will happen that will be announced, make sure that you bring a sandwich with you incase you miss the food portion of the event due to the traffic, ensure that you carry some spare fuel as maybe you will need it or even though there are no clouds in the sky bringing an umbrella will be a good precaution too. By the time you get through your list the event is over. Now obviously that is an extreme example but this is very true on what many people do except in a different scenario. With that example, if you focus on actually getting to the event I would think it would work out better don’t you think?

Again, I think it is all about focus. Even for things such as if you are trying to say make more money or to pay off a debt, the same can hold true. Wayne Gretzky, a famous hockey player for those who don’t know, once said this great quote which was something along the lines of “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take” which kind of does a nice job in putting it in perspective I think. Like with that, obviously you don’t want to shoot the puck to somewhere ridiculous and so you obviously have to think things out so that you know what you are doing, but at the same time you have to shoot the puck if you even hope to score.
