So with a new US president in place one news that has been high on the radar here in Canada is how apparently one of the first orders is to stop a project called the Keystone XL Pipeline. This was supposed to create a pipeline going from Alberta Canada to Nebraska in the US. From the news I read an executive order was signed that revoked the permit to construct the pipeline. Apparently the company instantly started to do massive rounds of layoffs.
I would think the reasoning is because the country wants to use renewable and clean energy. These pipelines often drew a lot of criticism that not enough isn’t being done to lessen dependency on oil. But what was interesting to see is how one side is cheering for this change because of environmental issues where another side is upset over the fact that this is costing a lot of people jobs based on agreements made.
It makes you think is this the right call where even if hundreds of people end up losing jobs and livelihoods instantly is that just what is necessary to force change per se? I don’t think there is a straight forward answer with the circumstance. I am actually more fascinated if the country can actually self-sustain with just electricity at the moment as I don’t think they are quite there yet. Just another scenario in the business world where an industry could literally fall at an instant with one change.
