Recently there has been a lot of rumbling here where transit workers are potentially going on strike. This means no bus services and of course that has a lot of people upset who rely on it to get to work. The topic of money came up of course and how much one gets paid. With that in mind it seemed like there were quite a few people who believe the pay is on par with other drivers around the world. Then a point about the working conditions came up such as drivers not getting enough breaks and people actually commented saying how they get paid enough to deal with it.
This is actually a pretty common mentality I find where people seem to believe as long as you get paid a certain amount of money then going through bad working conditions comes with the territory. I actually remember one person who kind of implied that on me before where I was talking about how for one job I actually had to do some physical work that was very dangerous for most people. One wrong move and you could be paralyzed. Most people related with it and how that was a little crazy. However, this one guy essentially said “oh well, you got paid for it” which was a very cold remark.
To me, no amount of money should justify having to go through very bad working conditions. Agreeing to do things that others won’t do and being compensated appropriately for it is one things, but saying it’s okay is another. Otherwise it’s like saying it’s okay to work in that kitchen that has deadly leaking gas everywhere that could blow up any minute because you are getting paid for it.
