Coronavirus Chinese Fear And Business Closures Due To Stereotypes

It’s pretty much all over the news about that Coronavirus that originated from China where a lot of people are catching the virus. While it’s debatable how infectious this really is elsewhere around the world there are a lot of precautions taking place such as scanning people who travelled from China. In many cases people are banned from entering other countries if they are arriving from an area known to have the virus.

That’s where it kind of gets interesting as I read various stories how because of this fear there are a lot of people who are associating Chinese people in general with the disease even if they have never been anywhere near the infected area. This has crippled a lot of businesses such as Chinese restaurants where people are afraid to even go into them as they assume there is a high chance you will catch the virus there.

Just look at some of these signs posted on social media where places are explicitly telling anyone coming from China as an example that they are not welcomed. Kind of makes you think where if you are a business that is getting subjected to these kinds of labeling how exactly do you stay afloat? For example, as a business do you just close shop, go on some campaign to educate people or just try and do things the same as always until everything goes back to normal?

An interesting predicament that you probably never expect to happen. Can you ever prepare for things like this as well? The only real thing I can think of is making sure you invest in ways to get active with your community. That way when something like this happens you will more likely have more advocates.
