Recently I got a request to potentially help create an instructional video of sort to help retain the knowledge of a person as once he is gone then everything else will go with him. So when the guy came up to me with the idea to try and create a documentary of sort to maintain that knowledge I would normally be excited. However, there was a huge conflict in my mind as I would love to help to ensure that future generations would have access to the information. But I knew that this person wanted to take it and profit from it in the future.
So what would you do in that case? My gut was telling me that it was a bad idea and that if I was going to do something like that the person themselves who we are learning from should be fully aware and all. I would perfectly understand if this was just business under a regular circumstance, but in many ways it just feels like the intent is wrong.
I would be inclined to say if you are doing it purely for business and financial gain then you should present it as such. At least be transparent about it because things like this can probably just end up burning bridges.
